Where’s Serenity? Firefly Season Two(Three?) Comics Coming Soon…

I’ll admit I’m only on episode five of Firefly, and so far it’s my least favorite of Joss Whedon’s shows(please don’t burn me at the stake).  Still I really enjoy it, and it’s a shame it ended so soon.  Now it appears browncoats may have reason to rejoice.

#WHERESSERENITY?  Where indeed?  It appears Dark Horse is about to go all in on a full “second season” of Firefly.  With Angel & Faith going on hiatus soon, I could use a little extra Joss Whedon produced Dark Horse comics in my life.  Hopefully it focuses on Kaylee a bit more, who is by far my favorite character(though Inara is great as well).  Less so on Jayne, he’s a jerk.

There’s likely to be another post soon.  Very, very soon.

Dexter “Are We There Yet? Review featuring Spoilers

Goodness that ending.  I can’t say I didn’t see it coming, because I kind of did.  This late in the game though, a bit strange.  No more vagueness.  Spoilers start here!

Cassie’s dead apparently at the hands of Zach, Dexter’s newest protégé.  According to Doc’ Vogel it’s 100% Dexter’s fault, you can’t expect Zach to go two days without killing.  Really Vogel, because last I recall Dexter wanted Zach dead and you convinced him not to do it.

Either way it’s irrelevant because as I suspected:  ZACH, YOU ARE NOT THE KILLER!!!  Dexter takes Hannah to the Keys for a little smooth jazz, fast food, sweet talking, with a little bit of attempted murder thrown in for good measure.  Yvonne Stahovski and MCH make the best of some pretty lame dialogue.  I liked how squeamish Hannah got when they saw the cops. I liked them poking fun at Dexter’s voiceovers.

Deb is the standout part of this episode.  Jennifer Carpenter just owns each and every scene she’s in.  Her calling Dexter, and subsequent reaction to him lying about being with Hannah was priceless.  Despite the fact that she’s gone from drug addicted party Deb, to suicidal Deb, and now back to Season Seven Deb all in one season she remains the best thing show has going for it.

Sorry Hannah, you’ve lost your edge.  Yvonne hasn’t been given any great material to work with this season which sucks.  I was watching “The Dark…Whatever” the other night(which guest stars the always stellar Jim Beaver of “Supernatural) and there’s a huge difference in how the then Dexter/Hannah relationship felt and how it feels now.  Then it was this natural love, you could tell they loved each other.  Now it feels like it’s happening because the plot demands it, so they can *POSSIBLE FUTURE SPOILERS* kill off Hannah at the hands of the Brain Surgeon by the end of the season.

The Deb and Hannah conversation was absolutely terrible.  This was a scene I was waiting for, after their excellent(which feels almost like an understatement) scene in last seasons finale I was excited to see what would happen.  Hannah’s reasons for why Deb shouldn’t turn her in were pretty lame(“I don’t like killing, and I love Dexter”), and the fact that this two minute conversation made Deb change her mind, after there were dozens of other scenes with better justification that could of, just pissed me off.  Deb has been dead set on taking down Hannah since she poisoned Sal Pryce last season, and this is what changes her mind.

By the end of the episode Deb makes a major decision, or insinuates one that is confirmed by the “NEXT WEEK ON DEXTER”:  She’s returning to Miami Metro.  I got to say I’m happy about this, while I initially liked Elway he’s turned into a total jerk(another instance of inconsistent characterization).  Still it appears Elway’s still going to be involved in the next few episodes which sucks.

Now onto Dexter’s ersatz family of killers.  Zach’s got a new characterization now(God, they should just connect the show to “Dollhouse” as to explain the constant personality shifts).  He’s now all “Golly gee Dex, can’t believe I made such a silly mistake”.  I must say I like the Jimmy Olsen/Robin like Zach the best out of all of his characterizations as silly as it is.  Figures they make him likable, only to kill him off.

Mama Vogel is much more involved this week, and somewhat likable(with the exception of the aforementioned scene at the beginning of the episode).  Too bad I don’t see her living past the next few episodes.  Their dinner table conversation is as cheesy as some of the earlier Dexter, Hannah, and Zach scenes but it’s a nice scene regardless.  Has a calm before the storm feeling to it.

The ending which I kind of already spoiled a bit.  Dexter returns to his apartment where he hears “Make Your Own Kind of Music” playing(which has been played twice so far this season) and see’s Zach’s lifeless(and brainless) body.  The moment I heard that song I knew it, something bad was gonna happen.

The Brain Surgeon’s back* and he killed Cassie(oh hey didn’t I say that on my last review, oh yes I did.)  Well in a way, I said I didn’t think Zach killed Cassie and her boyfriend did, and my current theory is Oliver is the Brain Surgeon and Vogel’s son.  Like Brian(the Ice Truck Killer) before him, he dated a girl only to keep an eye on Dexter, his identity was withheld from the viewers, and was one of the main character’s previously unknown relatives.  We already know she had a husband, perhaps she had a son.

A son who despite being the so called “psychopath whisperer” she never knew was crazy.  Or perhaps she did, and his condition is what drove her become what she is.  Her profile for the killer fits too:  30’s, single(at the time) and male.  It all makes sense, unlike Yates who made no sense whatsoever(one could say it was…B.S hahaha).  He also told Quinn he didn’t recognize Zach, when he had sawn him just the other night talking to Dexter.

Not much else happens.  For the last fifteen to twenty minutes alone the episode was pretty good.  Most of the episode is pretty boring, and at times laughable.  Either way I’ll keep watching.

Upcoming Stuff!

It’s been two days since my last post, so I just thought I’d let you know what I’ve been working on.  I wrote and finished a blog reviewing the latest episode of Dexter, but due to some technical malfunctions that will be delayed for a little bit.  Fear not though, I shall be posting a Dexter related article which is the beginning of a series:  Devil’s Advocate, where I talk about generally disliked characters, and talk about why I like them.  This isn’t limited to Dexter though, there’ll be some for The Walking Dead(comic and show, though sorry even I don’t like television show Andrea) and other shows.

I’m also going to do another “The Road So Far”(which is indeed a reference to Supernatural) where I review Smallville Season Eleven from “Guardian” to “Haunted”(which will include “Effigy”).  While I have read “Argo” and” Valkyre” I’m going to review those two at a later date, also “Haunted” kind of serves as a mid-season finale of sorts.  Amazing comic, I strongly suggest you pick it up.

There will likely be some speculation posts(one of which is certain to regard Supernatural, and my upcoming Dexter review has a lot of speculation at the end).  Don’t expect any Pretty Little Liars reviews, though I may give Ravenswood’s pilot a shot.  We’ll see.

Comic wise I’ll be doing some reviews.  Maybe doing a “What you should be reading” post.  Stay tuned folks.  Lots is coming in the not so distant future.

The Walking Dead No. 113 Review/Spoilers

             You and me…we’re the survivors…we don’t die.

The war isn’t coming.  It’s already here.  This issue is so thrilling, so many characters lives hang in the balance as Rick and Negan duke it out.  This issue is one of the best in a while, and here’s why…

The issue had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.  Watching as Andrea fought for her life against the Savior was hard to do.  The whole time I feared that she’d be killed like her inferior television counterpart before her, but thank god that’s not the case.  That last panel, those last words…uhhhh so good.

Negan’s battle with Rick is equally terrifying.  Negan is one sick bastard, but I couldn’t help but laugh at his line about what he does with Lucille when no ones around.  Nasty.  Also when he’s deciding who to kill first, I found it funny once again he backed out of a decision because it’d be racist(Like with Glenn in #100, who ended up getting killed by him regardless).

I honestly don’t get why everyone seems to hate Carl.  I thought it was awesome how he shot Lucille(the bat) like that.  Really hoping he makes it out of this alive.

The art is fantastic, I don’t know how anyone can say Charlie Adlard’s art is bad.  The look on Rick’s face when he see’s the body fly out of the bell tower.  It’s so well done.  Andrea’s face when she’s fighting the Savior, so bloody.  The penultimate page is great as well.

The only downside to this issue is not enough Ninja Jesus, though I’m sure next issue will fix that.  Overall, really awesome work here.

Dexter “Dress Code” Review! Major Spoilers follow!

So far I’ve found Dexter Season Eight(with the exception of the first two episodes) boring and poorly written(for the most part).  This came as a shock to me after how amazing Season Seven was(which is personally my favorite season).  It finally seemed like the Dexter writers were stepping up their game.

Then this season came along and kind messed it all up.  A lot of the ideas presented are great, but the execution has been unimpressive.  Doctor Vogel for example, the first two episodes that featured her were spectacular.  She was mysterious and intense.  Now she’s basically wallpaper, serving no real purpose besides filling up the actress’s contract for how many episodes she’s supposed to be in.

A lot of the new characters this season have been pretty boring to be completely honest.  Masuka’s daughter is far too cliché and bizarre for my tastes, Cassie is(was) underdeveloped and I knew from the beginning that she’d be nothing but cannon fodder, and Zach is so-so.  So I was rather excited for the return of Hannah(Yvonne Strahovski) who alongside Isaak stole the show last season(well maybe not stole..).

Hannah’s changed quite a bit since last season, entering a borderline abusive relationship with Miles.  I found this to be out of character and poorly executed.  Hannah takes shit from no one, she’s not Rita.  However the idea crossed my mind while watching this that she could be playing Dexter.  Goading him into a confrontation with Miles, only for Dexter be arrested.

Well I was wrong.  Hannah had a different plan in mind, a completely ridiculous and poorly though out plan which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.  Her plan was to get Dexter to kill Miles, because if she did it his family would suspect it was her.  Whereas if Dexter did it…no his family would still think it was her.  *Sigh*

Despite that, I do like Hannah in this episode.  Her interaction with Dexter is great, and despite the poor planning and taking shit from Miles, she’s pretty much the same old Hannah we know and love(y’know despite the whole taking shit from Miles and poor planning).  I also like that she’s not out for revenge and we’ll actually get more of her and Dex.

Speaking of Dexter and romantic relationships, Dassie shippers(if there even are any) sorry but that’s now out of the question as Cassie is now dead.  While Cassie seemed nice and all, I feel like she should have been introduced earlier(say one episode last season or Season Eight episode one instead of episode four) and better developed.  Part of me is thinking Zach may not be the killer(her boyfriend maybe?), but the Dexter writers haven’t really been going for any sudden plot twists this season.

My bet for the Dexter spin-off is… *drumroll*

BATISTA:  He’s a Good Detective(despite all of the contrary evidence)!

Even though he’s probably the worst detective in say.. the whole entire world, good old Angel has one of my favorite storylines this season(I know that’s really sad).  Quinn is actually somewhat awesome this season, although Jaime is kind of obnoxious(“Geez, why’d you have to pick the better choice for sergeant and not Quinn?!?!?” and her, the woman who dated Louis motherfracking Greene, giving love advice like really?).

Now to Masuka with awkward interactions with his weird daughter.  While I initially liked Masuka Jr.(which is what I’ll call her because I honestly don’t even know her name), the character really kind of creeps me out now.  In “Dress Code” to further bond with Masuka Sr., Masuka Jr. decides she should take her dad to her place of employment.  Doesn’t sound all that weird right?  Well when her place of employment is a topless sports bar, it’s pretty messed up.

Like really Masuka Jr.?!?!?  Why the hell would you do that?  Oh yeah.. the Dexter writers have forgotten about logic this season(see Hannah’s plan above).  I’ve got to say I really wish we could see more of Angie Miller, maybe even her and Masuka Sr.  getting together rather than this stupid storyline.

The Zach character is…eh.  I don’t hate him, but I certainly don’t care too much for him.  Another case of should’ve been introduced a little bit earlier instead of the filler Brain Surgeon storyline.  We are now led to believe he killed Cassie because he couldn’t go two days without killing anyone(which as I mentioned I don’t completely buy).  However if this is what happened, I’m happy it happened so soon instead of just dragging the storyline out.

Overall, this is a solid episode, better than some of the other ones for sure.  Still not sold on the season, but it’s finally feeling like it’s coming to an end.
